Background

Having gained a BSc Hons in Building Surveying, I worked for local authorities and the MOD as a Project Manager until I had my first child, when I found myself needing help and support. I then trained to become an NCT Breastfeeding Counsellor and from there, decided to gain my Diploma in Counselling, alongside studying for my BSc Hons in Psychology whilst raising my children and returning to university as a mature student.

I have been working as a Counsellor for over 10 years and am now in my final year of a Professional Doctorate (PhD) in Counselling Psychology at the University of the West of England, which is why I am now working as a Counselling Psychologist in Training. The course is based in Relational Psychology, and I work from an Evidence Based perspective, which means that all the techniques I utilise have a Scientific evidence basis to them and have been fully researched using Random Controlled Trials (RCT) or have an ethical research base to them. This means that the techniques and models I use have been studied and have evidence to show that they do work; not for everyone as we are all unique and different things work for different people! I have also completed over 200 hours of personal therapy, so I know exactly what it feels like to be the client.

As a Counselling Psychologist in Training, I am governed by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and bound by the ethical framework that the BPS use. I am fully insured and hold DBS certificates.

I am available for both short- and long-term counselling, as guided by you, the client.

Experience

I have been working as a therapist for over 10 years, and have worked with couples, young people and individuals, although I no longer work with couples at this moment in time. I am experienced in working with a wide variety of issues and owing to having had ‘turbulent’ teenage years, I work well with young people and can establish a good rapport with them. I am also a working mum, so can understand young people from both ends of the spectrum.

I work from an Integrative Perspective, which means that I utilise many different modalities in the therapeutic arena- simply put, I adapt and change the techniques that I use with each client, as each client’s issues are individual and unique to them. My work is grounded in a Relational approach, but I utilise Systems Theory, Existentialist theory and Attachment theory as a basis for my work, integrating the models depending on each individual clients needs; no two clients are the same and no two sessions will be the same.

I have worked in the NHS facilitating CBT based therapy and, voluntarily, as a Trainee Counselling Psychologist for a Charity in Cirencester.

I have experience in CBT, Person Centred Counselling, Cognitive Psychodynamic Therapy, Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT- although I do not use this in my private practice), Psychodynamic perspectives, Gestalt therapy, Transactional Analysis (TA), Mindfulness, Art therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and I have some basic training in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

I hold diversity and equity at the heart of my therapeutic practice; we are all unique and the importance of respecting this within the therapeutic relationship is an underpinning of supportive therapy.

Rates

Sessions are generally weekly, and I charge £50 per 50-minute session for Individuals. I am afraid that I no longer have capacity to see Couples and I do not work with primary school aged children.

Online Counselling is also available via Skype, or preferably Zoom, for £50 per 50-minute session.

Concessions will be considered on an individual basis and are dependent on your circumstances, and my availability.
